Riders defender Martinez earns PDL honor

Long Island Rough Riders defender Rich Martinez was named to the Eastern Conference team in the Premier Development League on Thursday.

He was the only local player to earn conference honors.

A steady presence on the backline, the Hofstra University senior and Puerto Rico National Team player was the only Rough Rider to play every minute of every game this season.

Martinez led a Rough Riders defense that only 10 goals this season, second best in the 67-team PDL.

"Rich was solid every game for us," coach Dan Fisher said. "His speed, quick-thinking ability and vision on the field was key to our defense this season. We’re proud that he’s been given this honor, one that’s very deserving."
