Sky Blue bulks up its roster

MORRISTOWN, N.J. - Sky Blue FC on Wednesday added midfielder Brittany Bock, Australian striker Lisa De Vanna, forward Danesha Adams and midfielder/forward Manya Makoski, pending league approval. With the signings, Sky Blue FC becomes increasingly more ready for the inaugural season of the National Women's Soccer League..

Brittany Bock joined Sky Blue FC in Japan last spring.

"The open signing period is a critical part of the team building process," Sky Blue FC head coach Jim Gabarra remarked. "After being allocated seven players, NWSL teams could only go out and sign four free agents, with international players being part of that. Not only did we have to be aggressive, we also had to make sure we addressed our needs. We got a great central midfield player in Brittany Bock, a proven goal scorer in Lisa De Vanna, a versatile attacking player in Danesha Adams and also a versatile flank player in Manya Makoski."

Bock, a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, is a three-year veteran of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) who played in two league championship matches and won a title with the Western New York Flash in 2011. No stranger to success, Bock played in the 2006 NCAA College Cup Championship, scoring the lone goal for the Fighting Irish in a tight 2-1 defeat to the University of North Carolina. After being selected fifth overall in the 2009 WPS Draft, Bock helped to lead a stingy Los Angeles Sol defense that allowed just 10 goals in 21 matches. The team eventually hosted the inaugural league championship game, falling 1-0 to Sky Blue FC. When the Sol ceased operations, she then joined now Sky Blue FC head coach Jim Gabarra with the Washington Freedom, again reaching the postseason before making the move to Western New York in 2011. 2013 marks the second time that Bock will don the Sky Blue FC kit, with the first being last spring when the Illinois native joined the teamed for a 10-day international tour of Japan.

De Vanna is a member of the Australian National Team, and she has been playing with the Matildas since 2004. The Perth native began her professional club career in 2006 with the Doncaster Rover Belles of the English Premier League before joining AIK of the Damallsvenskan in 2008. She made a big impact on the Swedish club, registering 15 goals on the season and ranking fifth overall in the league in that category. Gabarra next selected her 18th overall in the 2008 WPS International Draft after she made seven appearances with the Perth Glory of the Australian W-League, and she spent two seasons with him and the Washington Freedom before spending a third WPS campaign with magicJack SC. Since the closure of WPS, De Vanna has played internationally with the Newcastle Jets (Australian W-League), Link÷ping FC (Damallsvenskan) and again with the Perth Glory.

UCLA product Adams also brings three years of WPS experience to Sky Blue FC, beginning her professional career with the Chicago Red Stars in 2009 before suiting up for the Philadelphia Independence the following two seasons. Before turning professional, the Ohio native was the leading scorer of a Pali Blues Soccer Club that had a perfect run to the USL W-League Championship in 2008, and the national team veteran was also named the U.S. Soccer Young Female Athlete of the Year in 2006. Since the closure of WPS, Adams has spent time playing overseas, first with Medkila IL in Norway's Toppserien in 2011 and most recently in Sweden with Vittsj÷ GIK of the Damallsvenskan.

A native of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Makoski is a versatile player who spent her time in college playing for Arizona State University and began her professional career with the Los Angeles Sol in 2009. She then moved to the Atlanta Beat for the following two seasons, and the former Sun Devil most recently played with Aland United of the Finnish Women's Professional League. In just 25 matches in Finland, she tallied a total of 31 goals. Prior to beginning her professional career, Makoski gained international experience with the U.S. National Team on its U-19 and U-21 sides.
