Boris Bandov looks back at the very first World Cup qualifier on artificial turf in Seattle
Boris Bandov was wondering what all the fuss has been about. When the U.S. tussled with Canada in a World Cup qualifier at the Kingdome in Seattle on Oct. 20, 1976, the game was the first qualifier to be played on an artificial surface and under a roof. But for Bandov and many of his American teammates, it was business as usual on a field the players had become accustomed to while performing in the NASL.

US snatches stoppage-time win over Jamaica
Brad Evans scored in stoppage time to give the United States a 2-1 win over Jamaica in a World Cup Qualifying game at the National Stadium Friday night. It was the first time the U.S. had ever won a qualifier at “The Office.”

U.S. gives up big lead, holds on for 4-3 win
WASHINGTON--- For most of Sunday’s Centennial Celebration game at R.F.K., the United States looked like a different team than the one that got slammed by Belgium earlier in the week. That is, until late in the second half, when defensive lapses allowed Germany to score twice in three minutes and get back into what had been a lopsided game. The U.S. managed to hold on for a 4-3 win in front of a sellout crowd of 47,359.
