HANOVER, N.J. – There was no doubt in the mind of Red Bulls midfielder Tim Cahill that he would join Australia for their upcoming September friendly slate with scheduled matches against Belgium and Saudi Arabia.
Even if meant missing league play, Cahill says he is dead-set on being with the national squad.
Being away for these exhibition matches means Cahill will miss the Sept. 6 match against Sporting Kansas City, arguably the top team in the league. With the Red Bulls playoff picture cloudy, Cahill's lack of availability takes away the Designated Player from a pivotal match.
“I can't skip the internationals," Cahill said after practice at the Red Bulls training center Thursday afternoon. "I think for me, playing for your country is very important. When you see the World Cup, what an impact it made not only on myself but also the MLS and the New York Red Bulls. I'm not a player who picks and chooses. I feel also these games are important preparation for the Asia Cup.
“Being in an international, professional environment is only gonna help myself mentally and physically. It's highly unlikely to skip games like that.”
“This is going to be a strong squad. The players he's bringing in play for top caliber teams and are proven – internationally maybe not – but when I saw the squad last night I was impressed.”
