OPEN AND SHUT CASES
Red Bulls U-23, Italians fall, ousted from U.S. Open Cup
Both New York teams competing in opening round of the Lamar Hunt/U.S. Open Cup will not see the light of day in the second round next week.
The Red Bulls Under-23 team and the Brooklyn Italians were eliminated in their respective matches on Tuesday night.
The Red Bulls suffered a 2-0 loss to the Ocean City Nor'easters in Ocean City, N.J. while the Italians suffered the same fate in a 4-1 defeat to Icon FC at Aviator Field in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Argjent Duka, the brother of former Red Bulls Academy youth player Dilly Duka, who plays for the Chicago Fire, recorded a hat-trick for Icon, in the 13th, 52nd and 79th minutes.
Kevin Garcia added a header in the 70th minute against the Italians (National Premier Soccer League).
Icon (U.S. Adult Soccer Association) will play at the Richmond Kickers (Premier Development League) in the second round on Tuesday, May 21 at 7 p.m.
In their encounter, the Red Bulls U-23s (NPSL) never got it going, either. Markhus LaCroix struck for the hosts in the 14th minute before a crowd of 603 at Carey Stadium before Nicolas Perea added an insurance goal in the second half.
"First of all it was great to get a win in the cup competition and go into the next round," Ocean City head coach Tim Oswald said on his team's website. "We played fantastically and this is the start of a great 2013."
Lacroix scored the first goal as he broke in on goal after he was sent free via the long clearance by goalkeeper Keasel Broome.
The hosts' second goal came in the 58th minute as Frank Tweneboa dribbled down the right flank, cut towards the goal and pulled it back for Perea to tap home.
Lacroix almost made it a three-goal lead in the 63rd minute as Zocher Dennis fed Lacroix, who fired a shot that bounded off the post.
Ocean City (PDL) will play the Pittsburgh Riverhounds' (USL PRO) in Pittsburgh, Pa. next Tuesday. The Riverhounds eliminated RWB Adria (U.S. Adult Soccer Association) on Tuesday night.
The Riverhounds defeated RWB in penalty kicks, 5-3, after playing to a 1-1 draw in regulation and extratime.
The Red Bulls' first team will enter the competition in the third round.
