Deer Park's Burgess named winner of U.S. Youth Soccer's top goal

Deer Park, N.Y. resident Nkosi Burgess has been named the winner of the U.S. Youth soccer goal of the year.

Burgess, the winner of the 2012 Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association's goal of the year, was honored at the National Soccer Coaches of America convention in Indianapolis on Jan. 20.

He scored the goal last March 24 at Dowling College in Shirley, N.Y. while playing for the Dix Hills Heat, the 2011 State Open Cup champions, in a Boys Under-15 game against another Long Island Junior Soccer League team, Hauppauge Brazil.

A long free kick into Hauppauge’s penalty area appeared to be going long before Nkosi, with his back to goal, stuck out his leg and fliced the ball back over his head. Following the ball away from goal, he executed a perfect overhead kick as the Hauppauge defenders look on.

Dix Hills won the game, 2-0. Nkosi had celebrated his 15th birthday the day before and the wonder goal was definitely icing on the cake.
